Green Rubbish

This project started in 2009, with my interest lying in the idea of dying oceans, environmentalist issues around water and my new fascination for international bottom trawling.
Our studio practice at the time called for a concept surrounding the idea of Tuhura or 'place'.

I thus had a negative reaction to that word and after having read James Martin's The Meaning of the 21st Century - A Vital Blueprint for Ensuring Our Future, I was adamant I had to explore the true 'greenness' of New Zealand and its treatment of water.

Due to overfishing and overpopulation, many species of fish have been wiped out by commercial fishers. The great sadness lies in the fact that this is beyond our view.

Nasa satellite pictures of water near Mexico show the horrific damage of bottom trawling from space.

We cannot see what is below the surface of water. The water hides it all.
